1383In contrast with the traditional system of sentinel networks of mainly primary care physicians coordinated by the European Influenza Surveillance Scheme (EISS), InfluenzaNet obtains its data directly from the population. This creates a fast and flexible monitoring system whose uniformity allows for direct comparison of ILI rates between countries.
Any resident of a country where InfluenzaNet is implemented can participate by completing an online application form, which contains various medical, geographic and behavioural questions. Participants are reminded weekly to report any symptoms they have experienced since their last visit. The incidence of ILI is determined on the basis of a uniform case definition.

Join Ireland's Flusurvey for 2016/17!
FluSurvey is Ireland's online crowdsourcing system which allows members of the public to fight against seasonal flu. This system - in place across many European countries - helps medical professionals across Europe to track the spread of the virus.
We are re-starting the survey this week, and welcome participation from the public. The advantages of participating are that you can:
- Track your health status on our secure website over the winter months, and you can also add members of your family to the system.
- Check real-time information in Ireland and the EU relating to influenza-like illness
- Contribute to Citizen Science across the world by joining a research project that spans major European countries, the results of which have been already published and are accessible online.
